Part I: Jessica Fields, Risky Lessons

Figure 4-1 of Risky Lessons shows images from a flipchart on the use of contraceptive devices created by non-profit ETR Associates. Out of concerns that this flipchart might offend parents, Mrs. Wilkie hid this flipchart in a closet at Dogwood Middle School. However, Fields argues that this material could be immensely valuable for promoting agentic sexual subjectivity in students. In a short essay, explain what Fields means by “sexual subjectivity” that involves agency and explain why she thinks this poster would promote it. In your answer, compare and contrast this flipchart and its messages with sex education classes at the three schools that Fields studies.

Part II: Gender and Hookup Culture

Mainstream acceptance of heterosexual hookup culture, on college campuses in particular, is a relatively new phenomenon that many argue is attributable to increasing gender equality. Yet, many problems remain. Use course materials (e.g., Armstrong et al., Grazian, Lectures) to show that sexual satisfaction in heterosexual hookups certainly exists, but it is relatively rare for men and even more rare for women. How do socialization processes involving gendered sexual scripts, both prior to and during college, contribute to this phenomenon?

Tell Your Story: Narrative Essay:

In week one, you chose an idea for your narrative essay. In week two, you wrote an introductory paragraph. In week three, you wrote a body paragraph. Now it is time to finish the draft of your essay, revise it, and submit it for a final grade. Below are a few things to consider when writing and revising your narrative:

Purpose:

A narrative essay has a purpose, so you need to have intent and a reason for telling a particular story. Did the time in your life change you in some way? Did you learn a valuable lesson? What is the reason for telling this story?

Main idea/Thesis:

Whatever your purpose for writing the essay, you will let the reader know in your opening paragraph as you introduce the story. Stating the main idea, also known as a thesis, lets the readers know what to expect as they read. Your thesis may look like this: “The day I applied to college, my outlook on life changed.” Another example might look like this: “Choosing to have a child opened my eyes to other goals.” As you write your essay, keep your thesis in mind, and this will help keep you on track as you write.

Story Elements:

A narrative essay will have the same elements as a short story or novel. You will have a plot, the series of events that form the story, and a climax, a moment near the end of the story where the conflict in your story is most tense. Narrative essays should also have characters and a resolution to the conflicts.

Descriptive Language:

You can use descriptive language in your narrative essay. In week three, you practiced describing an object and a setting. Descriptive language helps your reader connect to your story and have a lasting impact.

Narrative Essay Instructions:

• The following criteria reflect the areas needed for a successful narrative essay.
• The essay should have a clear purpose and a main idea/thesis statement within the first paragraph.
• The narrative should share a larger lesson with the audience than simply retelling an event.
• A strong narrative centers on a conflict building from introduction to body to a thought-provoking resolution.
• It should use descriptive language to bring the reader into the experience.

After studying the assigned reading 21^st Century Communication: A Reference Handbook: Chapter 54: Traditional and New Media, and then reading “The Impact of New Media on Inter cultural Communication in Global Context” complete the following assignment by synthesizing the readings. Considering the statement “technologies are simply tools” write a short essay that incorporates answers to the following prompts:

A) Explain how that statement relates to the keywords describing new media: “manipulate, converge, and instant.”

B) How does the concept of intercultural impact of new media increase the complexity of the statement? You should especially consider the new experiences, for human beings that the convergences of new media and globalization bring about.

After studying the assigned readings for week 5, synthesize what you have learned by completing the following in essay format. Search online and find a website for an organization which has a campaign promoting a core issue that interests you (For example: The Red Cross and need for blood donations–You may not use this example).

Start your essay with a short overview of the organization and the issue (just a few lines) and then consider the topics we have covered in this week’s readings and discuss how they are reflected in what you see on this website.

What clear messages do you see?

What audiences is the institution trying to reach?

How has technology affected the way this organization presents itself?

Consider issues of Media Ethics and how they are represented or manifested in the website. Draw on examples offered on that website to support your observations. Specifically consider the content of 21^st Century Communication: A Reference Handbook: Chapter 77: Theories and Effects of Public Relations, under the section “Assumptions and Lay Theories.” Which of these theories does the content of your chosen site most closely align with? Why? Explain your answer.

QUESTION 3

After studying the assigned reading, Sociology: The Social Construction of Gender, considering the concept of “gender as socially constructed,” answer the following questions and prompts.

A) How does media create meanings about gender?

B) Provide examples of how this is manifested in our everyday lives.

C) Provide a link to a commercial/ad that stereotypes gender. Even though it is natural to find humor in some of these portrayals, in what ways is this problematic.

Also, consider that sex is a system of classification based on biology and physiology, while gender reflects the cultural meaning that is ascribed to a person’s sex, thus resulting in labels of “masculinity and femininity.” Furthermore, our biology is not distinctively male or female and a significant number of people are born “intersex” with variations in chromosomes or sexual organs. Most biological researchers agree on the estimation that intersex people are about as common as encountering someone with green eyes. It is important to understand that masculinity and femininity are not oppositional, although it seems to be portrayed so in media. In Western society (such as in the U.S. and Western Europe) we typically adhere to certain ideas and values that define masculinity and femininity as we perform the roles. What if the list was different? All of us, in honesty, could reveal that we interchange among the qualities. Take a look at the list and answer the following questions:
