We are inundated on a daily basis with information telling us what to eat and what not to eat. We are bombarded by advertisements showing us the latest diet or fitness craze. How do we decipher fact from fiction? How do we determine whether the latest diet trend is actually healthy? How do we make sense of nutritional recommendations or warnings?

As you learn about the human body, you will also explore the role of nutrition and exercise through your course project. The foods you consume and the physical activities you do have an impact on the overall function and wellness of your body. A healthy diet must provide essential nutrients in proper proportions and amounts. Consuming too few or too many macro-nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) or micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) can disturb the delicate balances in body function that contribute to overall health.


In this unit’s assignment, you will submit your nutrition and fitness goals. In Unit 6, you will begin to track your nutrition and fitness activities. Complete the following at this time to make sure you are ready to begin this unit’s assignment:

Steps for Competing your Nutrition and Fitness Goals and Tracking Progress

Step 1

Decide how you will track your progress.

There are many free Web sites available, such as SparkPeople and MyFitnessPal. These free sites will allow you to enter what you eat and what physical activities you participate in over the next 3 weeks. If you are already using a tracking program, that is great. The most important thing is that you are required to provide a report at the end of the 3 weeks. Usually the easiest way to do this is to generate and save a tracking report that can be submitted to your instructor.

For each goal that you set, you will want to choose specific indicators—steps or actions—that you can actually measure. For example, if your goal is to improve your diet, you might want to reduce your intake of saturated fat or sodium. That is something you can actually measure and track. If your goal is to improve your fitness by making exercise a regular part of your routine, you might add an extra block or mile to your daily walk, take the stairs at work, or start a more specific exercise program.
